This is the question that comes up most often when somebody writes to us about a three- or four-day stay: "we'd like a night in the desert, is that possible?" The answer depends entirely on what you mean by desert — and the two possible answers are very different.
The difference, in one sentence
Agafay is not a sand desert. It is a reg: a desert of stone and clay hills, about thirty kilometres south of Marrakech. The Moroccan Sahara, the one with the great dunes, begins around Merzouga and M'hamid, eight to ten hours away by road.
If you want the classic photograph — an orange dune crest catching the sunrise — Agafay will not give it to you. If you want silence, an open horizon and a night sky, Agafay gives you all three, an hour from your riad.

When Agafay is the right choice
You are in Marrakech for three or four nights. You want the feeling of the desert — the emptiness, the quiet, dinner under the stars — without losing two full days to the road. You are travelling with children, or with somebody who does not do well on long drives.
In that case Agafay is not a consolation prize. It is the right answer. You leave in the late afternoon, you are there for sunset, and you come back to sleep in Marrakech — or you stay under canvas if you prefer.
When it really has to be the Sahara
You have a week or more. The great dunes are precisely what you came for. You accept that the journey is part of the trip: the Tichka pass, the Dadès valley, the Todra gorges.
A Merzouga round trip in under three days exists on paper. We do not recommend it: you would spend close to twenty hours in a car for one night on the sand.
What people ask us most
Can you stay overnight in Agafay?
Yes. Several camps offer tents at different levels of comfort. The exact conditions, facilities and capacity depend on the camp, and we confirm them in your quote.
Is it cold at night?
Yes, even in summer. The gap between day and night is wide in a stone desert. A warm jacket is not an excessive precaution — it is the advice we give everybody.
Can you ride a camel in Agafay?
Yes, on a short outing. It is not the dune crossing you picture when you think of the Sahara, but the landscape is real and so is the experience.
Where we stand
For a stay of under five nights in Marrakech we point people to Agafay every time, and we say plainly that it is not the Sahara. For a longer trip, the Sahara deserves the time it asks for, and we would rather tell you we cannot compress it than sell you two days of driving.
